HUD Opens Senior Housing to Hurricane Sandy Evacuees

On Nov. 9, 2012, HUD chief John Trasviña released new guidelines to support housing providers that wish to help those displaced by Hurricane Sandy. Under the new guidelines, HUD will relax the rules to allow senior housing communities to admit evacuees under age 55 without jeopardizing their qualification for certain legal exemptions under the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA). HUD Awards $5 Million Through New Tenant Resource Network

Housing advocates across the country will see an influx of nearly $5 million in grant money to assist low-income tenants receiving Section 8 project-based rental assistance.

Fair Housing Organizations Receive $40M+ in Grants

HUD: Veterans Deserve to Live Free from Housing Discrimination

To mark Veteran’s Day, HUD's theme this year is “Honoring Our Women Veterans,” according to a posting on HUD's blog, The HUDdle. Recalling his service on the frontlines during the Vietnam War, Robert Walker, Director of Education and Outreach, Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, wrote, “I know that if it were not for the women who served in vital medical roles during that war, I probably would not be alive today.”

HUD Releases New Fair Housing Report

More than 10,000 fair housing discrimination complaints were filed in fiscal year 2010, according to HUD's annual State of Fair Housing report released late last month. Discrimination based on disability continues to be the largest single category of complaints, according to the report.
