This month, HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program celebrated its 50th anniversary. The HCV program is HUD’s single largest investment in affordable housing. Signed into law by President Richard Nixon, the program encompasses a network of about 2,200 state and local public housing agencies (PHAs). And more than 5 million people in 2.3 million low-income families use vouchers.

Lead exposure poses significant health risks, particularly to children under 6, and HUD’s recent actions reflect a commitment to mitigating these risks by aligning its policies with updated CDC guidelines and providing funding to reduce health hazards in public housing. 

HUD recently announced that it has joined over 25 federal agencies in a coordinated effort to address the growing threats of extreme heat and climate change. As part of the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS), HUD is supporting the nation's first-ever National Heat Strategy for 2024-2030, which provides a framework for developing science-based solutions to mitigate the dangerous effects of extreme heat.

HUD recently held an all-day summit on property and liability insurance in affordable housing. The summit was hosted by Acting HUD Secretary Adrianne Todman and Federal Housing Administration Commissioner Julia Gordon. 

With a heat dome intensifying over the northeastern United States this week, HUD recently announced new guidance on the use of HUD funding to help mitigate the impacts of extreme heat for nearly 1.6 million residents in public housing, especially for those most vulnerable residents. Although heat waves in mid-June are not unprecedented, the duration of this one suggests that this summer could be particularly brutal.

HUD recently announced $30 billion in renewal funding for the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. HUD recently announced the federal and local takeover of Indianapolis Housing Agency. HUD has entered into a cooperative endeavor agreement (CEA) to take control of the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) alongside the City of Indianapolis.

HUD recently announced over $128 million to 835 Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) and Project Based Rental Assistance (PBRA) owners for the 2023 Renewal and New Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program grants. 

HUD recently announced that it entered a voluntary compliance agreement with a housing provider in Brooklyn, N.Y., to resolve a compliance review concerning non-discrimination in marketing and tenanting procedures.

HUD recently announced that it is making its Energy and Water Benchmarking Service available for sites participating in its Multifamily project-based rental assistance programs. This new, free service provides participating multifamily property owners with data on energy and water consumption at their properties.
