Veterans' Residence to Generate Jobs with New Federal Stimulus Funds

Mar 24, 2010

The Jericho Project, the national nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, has received federal stimulus funds toward the construction of its Bronx, N.Y. Veterans Residence, which will provide supportive housing and counseling for veterans.

The new construction project received $10.6 million from the Tax Credit Assistance Program. Constructed over the next 18 months, the program will generate immediate jobs for construction workers, professional staff, and counselors once the residence is completed. Jericho’s Veterans Residences are the first dedicated residences for homeless veterans to be built in New York in over 15 years.

Scheduled for completion in 2010 and 2011, the two new buildings in this project will include 76 units and green design features such as a green roof, energy efficient systems and other appliances that will enable them to achieve LEED certification.

The Veterans Residence is also being funded by the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, a $1 million grant from the Bronx borough president, and private donations. Services funding is coming from the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
