HUD, EPA, DOT Partnering to Make Communities More Sustainable

HUD, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) are working together to coordinate federal policies, programs, and resources to help urban, suburban, and rural areas build more sustainable communities. The partnership is focused on ensuring that housing and transportation goals are met while simultaneously protecting the environment, promoting equitable development, and helping to address the challenges of climate change.

• HUD announced its new Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities, which will help the three agencies streamline their efforts to connect housing to jobs, foster local innovation, and build a clean energy economy.

• President Obama proposed $525 million in his budget for an ambitious new livability initiative at the DOT. Its Office of Livable Communities will launch initiatives to expand transit in low-income neighborhoods.

• The EPA's new Office of Sustainable Communities will encourage communities to take an integrated approach in making environmental, housing, and transportation decisions.
