Owner Investigated for Forcing Out Rent-Stabilized Tenants

Jul 31, 2014

An owner is under investigation for allegedly using illegal tactics to force rent-stabilized tenants out of his properties. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman launched the investigation following complaints about the behavior of the owner's company, Steven Croman Realty.

The company owns approximately 100 properties throughout Manhattan and has made repeat appearances on the Village Voice's Worst Landlords List. The accusations leveled against the company by tenants include frivolous lawsuits, ignored or mishandled repairs, harassing phone calls, illegal entry into tenants' apartments, and intentionally disruptive construction. Recently, one of Croman Realty's employees, an ex-NYPD officer, was hit with a cease-and-desist order for harassing and intimidating tenants.
